Evaluation
After assessing our trailer ‘Over the line’ and reflecting on all the research we put into it I feel that it mirrors a lot of conventions of a real movie trailer. Throughout the production we as a group were keen to create a realistic approach as we believed that this would increase the quality of our work. Therefore we used various devices that people were used to seeing in normal Hollywood/British movie trailers. For example the use of institutional data, BBFC logos, real film companies and film festival in which the film has been showed in i.e. Cannes. We got these ideas from a range of trailers varying from big budget blockbuster such as ‘Avatar’ to independent British movies like ‘One day’. In addition to this we closely studied many trailers to get a feel of all the different shots we could use in such a small space of time – while maintaining the clarity of the trailer. Doing this enabled us to use shots that normally we never would have. For example from the Brick trailer we decided to have close up of the rubix cube to show the distortedness of our protagonist. We also used montages and a general speed up of the action as an inspiration from the adulthood trailer. This very cleverly used the music and growing acceleration in action to keep the audience on edge. We tried to use this as a foundation for the action in our own trailer as we felt this lay out would fit our narrative perfectly.
Throughout the construction of our trailer we came across many strengths and weaknesses as a group and also as individuals. For example as a group our strengths were that we were all very keen to start working and devising the trailer. We all found it easy to communicate and listen to each others idea’s which in my opinion helped a lot as each of us had a different approach which enabled the trailer to be diverse. For example, whereas I bought ideas forward on how to portray the soft vulnerable side of our protagonist, Yasser and Wadud were much better at devising the bullying scenes which were rather tedious to construct as we clearly had to show a fully blown fight. Furthermore I really felt that as a group we all communicated and worked well which enabled us to reach our targets and successfully record and get things done in short spaces of time. On the other hand, in my opinion of our major weaknesses were the cast and the reliance we had to place upon other people. I feel that this hindered out progress a lot as we were let down by cast members on various occasions. We also felt that the weather and length of the days was a disadvantage to our progress. Due to the fact that we only received the camera over one weekend we had to get all our day time shots done in that one weekend and we were therefore unable to reshoot. However luckily we had the advantage of using home camera’s which was a very similar quality to the college cameras. However if we had not had access to these camera’s I feel that it would have been difficult for us to re shoot some crucial scenes. Furthermore a personal disadvantage for me was my lack of skills with Photoshop, I found this very frustrating as I was unable to do certain things to help out. However I did use this as an opportunity to learn more about the software and increase my knowledge. One major improvement that could be made within our trailer is definitely the use of more Digetic sounds, I feel that our trailer has a real lack of these and this may hinder our chances of receiving good marks.
Although my research investigation can not be directly linked to my trailer because the trailer does not have any prominent young female character in it, I still strongly feel that a lot of the research I undertook did help me understand the nature of British movie much more clearly. For example all my research on the British movie industry helped us understand which movie companies would be most likely to fund a movie such as ‘Over the Line’ through this we made the decision to use the ‘Odd Lot film entertainment’ company and our own company called ‘Spartan studios’ as our main movie studios. Furthermore it also helped in the way we represented our young characters, especially the main bully. I was able to do this after I had closely studied the representation of the characters in Kidulthood and this helped us understand the kind of clothes the inner-city bully/bad boy should wear. Kidulthood also helped us recreate the young urban feel in our own trailer.
My research investigation also helped us use the conventions from movies such as Kidulthood that are specially devised to attract the target audience. The target audience for our trailer is young inner-city youths ranging from 16 - 24 which is very similar to Kidulthoods target audience. In order to maximise the appeal of our trailer we used certain conventions such as, a very inner-city back drop and young people represented in tracksuits and ‘chav’ wear. However at the same time we also tried to incorporate a sense of being different through our protagonist as we showed him in very different clothing to everyone else to show individuality and how it is difficult to be different in an inner-city environment. Through these conventions we wanted reach out as much as possible to out intended target audience as well as maximising other people interest within the trailer.
Now that we have completed the trailer I do feel that as a group we have come along way since we first started out. I have enjoyed working on the trailer although it has not always been easy especially as we only had a group of three people, which meant each of us had a lot of responsibility. The genre of our trailer is inner-city crime, which worked well as we were able to implement a sense of realism to the trailer due to the environment we live in. Furthermore there are many things that I have learnt from the devising of the trailer and although I am pleased with the end product I am sure that I would do certain things differently if we were to do it again. The main ones being finding more reliable cast and brushing up on my own software skills.

The cast
Our caste was that of all boys. At times they were very hard to work with as they very easily got distracted and many of them were unreliable. However dispite all this we did manage to finally get the filming done - i did need to shout and be rather assertive at times due to how easily distracted many of the boys got while filming.
I learnt that recording a 3minute trailer is much harder then it sounds as you have to depend on other people alot. I did not enjoy this aspect of creating the trailer as it set us as a group behind many times and stopped us making progress on many occasions.

ROLE EVALUATION
As the director and being in charge of music i found my job rather challenging at times. As it was my job to organise the filming and the structure of our organisations. Although this was tricky to begin with i feel that as our group worked togther it helped my job incredibly .
Being the director i had to make some important decisions - some of which were successful whilst others were'nt. For example one of the first mistakes we made was the filming at birmingham university as although the location was good , itwas very hard for us to get all our caste members to get there and dedicate a substancial amount of time. Furthermore due to these problems we were unable to reshoot some scenes and therefore had to change our location completely. And although we managed to recover from this pretty well , initially it was a huge problem as getting the caste and equipement togther was rather difficult so instead we did the sames in and around college to make life easier.
In my opinion i did all that i could to be a good director however my group helped me alot , especially when it came to decision making.
Furthermore being in charge of sound was also interesting as half way through our production we decided to change the feel of music we were going for and instead for opting for pure grime we decided to incorporate indie music as it reflected our protagonists personality.
We chose songs from bands such as ' The Fray' and 'Cold play' . I enjoyed using these songs as in my opinion it gave the trailer a new feeling and a distinct edge bring a sense of realism and indivduality into innercity Birmingham.

Wednesday 10th February
Today we completed the voice overs and all other pending jobs.
For example the metro newspaper artcicle - which we edited on photoshop and put together to make a realistic looking newspaper story about ' the missing local boy'.
We got this idea from the brick trailer , which also used the imagery of a missing person.
We used the metro newspaper as a template for our own article.
Tuesday 9th February
Today we created all the extra screen shots that we wanted to incorporate within our trailer to make it look as realistic as possible.
Today we created all the extra screen shots that we wanted to incorporate within our trailer to make it look as realistic as possible.
In order to do this we decided to add -
1. Captions that help the audience understand the plot ie/ The bully (this was inspird from the brick trailer.
2. institutional data
3.The award that the movie is up for and the film festivals it was involved with ie/ Cannes.
4. The credits
5. The website
6.' COMING SOON'
We worked hard and together during this lesson and as a result we got all our captions completed.
Below are example of logo's we used for inspiration

MONDAY 8TH FEBRUARY 2010
- today in class me and wadud uploaded all our new footage onto the macs in order for us to burn it onto a dvd and take it home.
- whilst watching the footage we were rather pleased with how it turned out , we both noticed a improvement in the quality of our filming which was much better then it was back in november when we first starting recording. I think this exprience has helped us alotto improve all our work and research.
-In the lesson we also discussed the format of our trailer . We did this by refering back to the Brick , Adulthood and Kidulthood trailers as the sequence of events that they portray were rather relevant to our narrative too. For example the Adulthood trailer starts off very slowly and slowly and the builds up along with the action until it reaches an equillibrium which after the events the story begins to slow down again. We found this very interesting and thought we could apply this technique to our own trailer.
This shot is used in Adulthood to show the point when all the action reaches its peak . At this point the music is stopped and everything freezes , to show the increase in tension. we recreated this effect in our trailer when out protagonist picks up the brick to hit the bully . We slowed the shot down and and focused in on the brick and mobeens face.Wednesday, 10 February 2010

While shooting our trailer we kept the Brick and adulthood trailers in mind. We wanted to re create the atmosphere of both those trailers combined.
We did this by using shots and ideas from the trailers as our inspiration. For example this close up shot from the brick trailer is something that we recreated for our trailer as it fitted the narrative.

4/01/10 - 8/01/10 First week back to college
This past week , has not been very productive for our group . As there has been alot of disruption to our normal timetable due to the snow. Therefore we were unable to have group meeting and follow our schedule through. However this week we aspire to work even harder to stay on top of things and stick with our initial schedule.
The pictures I have posted are from the various locations we used to record our trailer. As you can see most of the recording was done during the evening this was a advantage and disadvantage for us. As we did need many evening shots in our trailer but we also needed day time shots for which recording was difficult. However we did manage to fit the day shots into our schedule and managed to record them successfully.

Strengths-
Our group members are all willing to help on another, as were all excited and determined to create a good quality trailer.
- Were all focused on achieving the best that we can, and all have therefore put social commitments to one side while working on the trailer.
- They are coming out with fantastic ideas and suggestions to help make this a brilliant trailer.- We can sort out problems very fast as we are working together as a team and were putting all our effort into the trailer.
- All members of the group are creative and put forward a wide variety of ideas for us to work with.
- Each member of our group had an area of expertise for example Wadud is good at editing and Yasser with music and the use of cameras. This was extremely useful as we all used our strengths to aid one another.
Weaknesses-
Our cast was sometimes a problem as some of them could not make it for shooting and therefore caused delays to our production - All three of us have very different timetable which meant none of us were on frees together, this meant that all our recording had to be done after college which was a problem as we needed day shots for some of our scenes.
- Sometimes we couldn't return the camera before 9 and therefore we couldn't use the equipment again
- Our lack of experience with Final Cut Express, meant that Wadud preferred to use his editing software at home , which meant that he had to make some decisions on his own.

Reflection on our group’s progress
In my opinion I think that our trailer is not going too badly. As a group we have reached many of our targets and together we have managed to get a lot done. Unfortunately however we have had some set backs – but this is to be expexted in any project. Although most of our setbacks have been largely due to issues out of our control i.e./Weather.
I think that as a group we have learnt a lot this term , including how to use final cut , how to work as a group while working in the freezing cold and we all have definitely improved on our recording skills.
This term were all going to carry on working as a group to achieve the best we can. We know need to tie up all the loose end
i.e. / Write out the voice over script.
Record the voice over
Finalise the music choices
Re shoot at Birmingham University and the alleyway scene.
Create some more studio poster like the Spartan one.
Put in the captions
Finally, thread everything together.

Target Audience
~Target Audience~
For our trailer I believe that were targeting teenagers/young adults from around 16-24. I don’t think it is for teenagers younger then the age of 16 due to the violent nature and language that we’ve used in the trailer to highlight the urban/tragic aspects of the protagonist life.
As a group we have used movies like Kidult hood, Adulthood and ONE DAY to guide our neiche market. For example Kidult hood directed by Menhaj Huda was made on an extremely low budget of £600,000 and was marketed to young male and female teenagers. This is very similar to the themes and that we want to create for our own trailer. For example Huda did not use any costume/make up designers, to hold the authenticity of the film; our trailer is doing the same thing and therefore I feel the target audience is similar too.
As a group we feel that our trailer attempts to represent a serious number of issues of what some teenagers growing up in today's society have to go through; this explains why so many people who are in this age group may watch it. There is also a very realistic approach within this film as most of the actors and actresses are within this age group and therefore know what others their age go through.

My primary responsibility was music.
This meant that I had to compile a list of possible songs that we could use within the trailer. I found that this was an exciting challenge as I did not have any prior knowledge of music that would be relevant to our trailer. Therefore researching the grime/street style music was very interesting as I found some excellent meaningful tracks.
I shortlisted a playlist that I burned onto a C.D so that I could listen to all the songs easily throughout the holidays. By doing this I was able to really visualise songs that would be best suited for the trailer.
I have listed the playlist below
*Roll Deep – when I’m here
*Devlin – Ghetto Kyote
*Roll Deep – Pen pals
*Kano – Hunting we will go
*Kano – Paper
*Mike GLC- My life
*WRETCH 32 – My life
*Bashy – my nightmare
*Low Deep – Get set
*4 ‘0’Clock Bashy –Dontcha know
*Shystie – Arms open wide
*Kano – Hustler
*Dizzie Rascal – instrumental
*Lethal Bizzle – POW
Although we are not planning to use all these songs, I have now gained a good sense of the kind of music that we want to use. I plan to show this C.D to my group and come up with about 5 tracks that we could use short snippets of. Once we have selected the songs, I will begin to work on what part of the song we want to use and if we need to slow down or fasten the pace of the beats.
Furthermore being in charge of music meant that I had to organise a person to do a voice over for the end part of our trailer. I have found a colleague who has an appropriate voice and who is willing to do the voice over for us. Know my next job is to write a script out so that he knows exactly what to say – I plan to do this within the next couple of days, after conferring with my group.
I have also begun to compile many sounds from various websites that will be useful to our trailer as well as giving a realistic sharp edge to the sound.
